This
project deals with the time I've lost. I
fled Okinawa to live in London for 12 years.
Even though I had a domicile both in Okinawa
and London, I couldn't say I existed on both
sides. To remedy this lack of existence on
Okinawa, I meet and talk with the inhabitants,
who spend their time here while I was absent.
This installation is a construction of sounds
and words made in those conversations. A
work expressing my identity as Uchinanchu,
the traditions and culture and the problems
of this island.
A big part of this installation is the exhibition
site. My father was a carpenter who tried to
build his own house to live there with his
family. For several reasons he never accomplished
it and the house remained in this incomplete
state for over 30 years. My father died four
years ago and the house slowly reprobated over
time. I chose this peaceful house I inherited
from my father to quietly face my okinawan
identity.
